I applied to be a car salesman at a local VW dealer. I think it went well? But my heart is about to exit my body in an explosive manner. I hope I get it, I wanna work full time so I can move out of my parents house and in with my GF. It would save so much gas. I hope I get it.

Hell, yeah! How’d it go? What kind of questions did they ask you?

I interviewed with the internet sales manager, the new car sales manager and the used car sales manager. They asked stuff like; What type of personality I was. One of the guys I talked to owned a ranger so we bonded over that. He asked me if and why optima batteries were better (I think it was a veiled sales test). They asked my background and such. I tried to express that I knew cars.

Good luck. My local VW dealer only seems to hire 40-year-old men with French-sounding names.

Cool! Good luck! I have these fantasies about doing car retail, only because I feel like I have a lot more to offer than a lot of the one-dimensional salespeople I’ve encountered myself.

Nice. Did no one just ask you to sell them a car? I’d think there should at least be an elevator pitch they ask you for...

Shitty hours, shitty money unless you can sell with the best of them - usually, they’ll hire just about anyone willing to work. I toyed with the idea of selling cars many times before - I even had a job interview at a VW dealership once :). But, if you can make it work for you and live around your work schedule, you’ll get to drive cars all day long and talk to all sorts of people.

My experience from a very picky hiring team: You know cars? Who cares? CAN YOU SELL? That is all that matters. When they ask you what motivates you, they expect you to say money. Every other answer is a distant second. Even the rational managers will tell you that you're not there to make friends, or even to make long-term customers — you're there to sell TODAY so it goes on the books THIS MONTH. It's insane. I was much more of a long-term sales guy and my referrals reflected that. But most management is all about NOW.

Make sure you know your shit!

Most VW salesmen from my experience know jack shit about the cars. Like, not even what’s on the window sticker.

Good luck! Just make sure you’re passionate about the products. :P

I’ve fantasized about it, but then I remeber their schedules. It’s not a job for anyone with a family.

Don’t you need a sales license to sell cars?

Not to pry, and tell me if I’m out of line here, but do you ever think of moving out of state to go to another design school? I’ve read some nasty stuff about AI, and Miss Mercedes is having a problem with ITT Tech.

From what I understand your degree might not be worth that much. Just looking out for you.

Good luck. I did my time at a VW/BMW/Saab/Isuzu shop while in college, partially in a sales role. If you have the personality for it, you can make decent money, but the hours sure suck.
